Dr. Shamim Hashimi ( شمیم ہاشمی; , शमीम हाशिमी) on 14 August 1947), is an Urdu and Persian poet.He is basically a poet of Ghazal. He has also written poems in other forms of poetry of different meters. His full name is Syed Muhammad Shamimuddin.
Shamim was born in a highly educated family. He got mentors like Syed Shah Badeeuddin Hazeen R.A., Syed Shah Ghayasuddin Hasan Chishti R.A, Ata Hussain Ata Kakvi etc.. Shamim Hashimi chose Abr Ahsani as his mentor in Poetry writing who was a student of Ahsan Marharvi and Ahsan was a disciple of the great Dagh Dehlvi. Shamim Hashimi being from the Dagh school of Urdu Poetry has very clean and traditional way of writing Urdu Ghazal. He published many of his books. One of his famous books is “Toot tay patton ka dukh”. Many of the famous critics of time have written about the Poetry and style of speech of Dr Shamim Hashimi like Zaheer Ghazipuri, Dr Hussain ul Haque, Dr Shabab Lalit, Krishna Kumar Toor, Prof Qamar Rais, Shamsurrahman Faruqi, Nadim Balkhi etc..
Under the shadow of his intellectual guardians, Shamim’s intellect flourished and so did his command over Shayari and language, perhaps in such a way that the great experts on the subject have praised him. Shamim Hashimi has done a great job in Urdu, Persian and Arabic Language and Literature. He has written Poetry in Urdu and Persian Languages. Many have been benefited from his knowledge and awareness but he himself moved away from the Mainstream of Urdu. Mainstream and the places that could earn instant fame but Shamim Hashimi never attended ceremonies to receive awards and never attended Mushairas, he never applied for any award though awards were sent to his home. Shamim Hashimi also moved to such a remote area that he became distant from his own people, but his determination and courage should be commended that he kept the lamp of knowledge lit in all circumstances. Despite the unfavourable conditions and the inconveniences of publishing and broadcasting, he continued to write and compose and the poet within him is always alive. Many of his poetry collections have gained popularity and many are waiting to be published. Shamim Hashimi paid special attention to Ghazal. His book "Toot tay patton ka dukh" has the status of authority in the subject of Urdu Poetry. Shamim Hashimi is an expert in Arooz.

Shamim Hashimi was born in Sasaram, Bihar, India. He received his primary education in Madrasa Khanqaah Kabeeriyah. He obtained "Aalim" (Graduation) at the age of 15. He pursued Fazil in Persian and Urdu from Madrasa Shams-ul-Huda, Patna. After completing his studies from madrasa he obtained master's degree in Urdu language & literature and Diploma in Education from Patna University. He received the Doctorate degree for his research thesis on the life of Mahjoor Shamsi. He is from the Daagh Dehlvi school of Urdu poetry and is one of the disciples of Abr Ahsani Gunnauri.
Shamim Hashimi began writing poems at the age of 9. His poems and prose were published in national magazines of Urdu literature like Funoon, Shair, Aaj kal and subh-e-naw-patna etc. He has written many books in Urdu, Persian and English, including collections of his Urdu and Persian Ghazals. His major literary work was published in the 1970s. One of his best books Toot tay patton ka dukh was published in 2005 which has widely been appreciated. He has also received Sahitya Bhushan and Bihar Urdu academy award.
